When Psychological Disorders Collide (Sayonara! Zetsubou-Sensei)

The main cast of "Sayonara! Zetsubou-Sensei".

“I’m in despair!!” - Nozumu Itoshiki

What happens when you find yourself surrounded by psychologically-flawed individuals? Do you try to avoid them as much as possible? However, what if you had to be around them for your job? This is the scenario played out for one high-school teacher in Koji Kumeta’s Sayonara! Zetsubou Sensei. It is a manga that pokes fun at daily aspects of Japanese life. In some ways, the title reflects how certain countries & cultures (especially Japan) view mental disorders & illnesses.

Volume 1 Cover for "Understand Psychosomatic Medicine Through Manga"

There’s actually a manga (Yes, the link title is the title of the manga) running around that talks about psychological disorders. This is pretty fascinating. The manga also takes a humorous look at these disorders as well. At least it’s not moe. This project is supported by the You Mental Clinic in Tokyo, Japan.

Amazingly, the first volume of the series was ranked in Amazon.co.jp sales charts in Japan. The 2nd volume can be preordered at Amazon.co.jp and is coming out on November 22.

The latest chapter of this series is online and it’s about pedophila, which you can read here.

It is also noted that the creative team, Yu Yoki & So, have done psychology-related books before. They have done Otona no 1 Page Shinrika (Adult’s 1-Page Psychology) and a book called Shinri Kenkyūka Yūki Yū no Sūpaariaru RPG (Psychology Researcher Yū Yūki’s Super-Realistic RPG).

I hope this manga helps to understand certain people (especially otaku) better. Be sure to read the comic on paranoia (since it contains a Phoenix Wright parody). It made me laugh. :D
