Anywho, I’m glad Ozaki had a great time at New York Comic-Con. Yes, WE ALL LOVE TIGER & BUNNY HERE IN NEW YORK CITY. Manhattan IS Tiger & Bunny. I’m still amazed at how the series has related to many fans all over the world. NYC really is one of the most diverse places on Earth. Thankfully, the Sunrise crew didn’t choose L.A. or else everything could have been too glitzy & materialistic.

New York Comic-Con 2011 Adventure Log!
On October 13-16, 2011, the East Coast’s biggest pop culture convention landed upon New York City once again with an infusion of comic book artists, celebrities, video game developers, and of course, a LARGE number of cosplayers. New York Comic-Con 2011 managed to draw an attendance of 105,000 over the span of 4 days. A lot of things happened, so get ready for a somewhat extensive recap.

Plans for New York Comic-Con 2011
Hey everyone, I just want to give a quick update on what’s going to happen regarding what I’m doing at New York Comic-Con.
First off, I will be attending the convention on Friday. I might attend the following panels.
“Unusual Manga Genres” (11:00am - 12:00pm) at Anime Stage
Sorry, Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix’s panel on the game is at the same time). I just don’t care about you at all.
“Is ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ A Superhero?” (12:15pm - 1:15pm) at Room 1B03 or “YEN PRESS” at Room 1A02
In my opinion, Lisbeth Salander is one of the most unique heroines in recent memory. I truly think that she’s a good role model for young girls who are struggling to survive. Though that Yen Press panel entices me too.
“Mythbusters: Anime Edition” (2:00pm - 3:00pm) at Anime Stage
This intrigues me to a huge degree as I have watched the TV show before with my cousin.
“Hiro Mashima & Kodansha Comics” (6:30pm - 7:30pm) at Room 1A24
I never was interested in Fairy Tail, but I am going to the panel to support Kodansha USA’s efforts.
“Vertical Inc. Industry Panel” (8:45pm - 9:45pm) at Room 1A03
I love stuff from Vertical. THANK YOU FOR PICKING UP GTO: SHONAN 14 DAYS!
On Saturday, I will be cosplaying as Cold-Blooded Tough Guy Takasugi-Kun from 3Z Ginpachi Sensei and hopefully will be wielding the infamous “Patriot”.
I will be attending the following panels:
“Sunrise” (12:00pm - 1:00pm) at Room 1A03
I will be attending with a friend who will be cosplaying Tsukuyo to promote Gintama to everyone!
“Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3” (2:45pm - 3:45pm) at American Airlines Theater, Room 1A06
Phoenix Wright reveal (who I HOPE WILL BE REVEALED in this panel) will be EPIC.
“CBLDF: Defending Manga” (7:30pm - 8:30pm) at Room 1A23
If you consider yourself a serious manga fan, I highly recommend you check this panel out. Seriously.
Sorry, I will not be attending the Cosplay Masquerade, though I might sneak a peek and whack people with the Patriot.
On Sunday, this is what I hope to be attending:
“VIZ Media” (10:45am - 11:45am) at Room 1A23
I should make a petition to bring back Gintama :P
“Tiger & Bunny” (1:15pm - 2:15pm) at Room 1A03
I will be attending this panel with a friend. One of my favorite animes due to its Western influence.
“Anime News Network Panel” (2:30pm - 3:30pm) at Room 1A15
One of my Google Reader sites and always a pleasure to visit. This will be my first time going to one of their panels.
So, I think that covers up my plans for the convention. Of course, things will be tentative. I will also be shopping for Gintama merchandise.
If anyone wants to meet me in person and talk about a variety of things, feel free to tweet me (if I have reception in that god-forsaken Javitz Center). For those who are interested, I have indeed moved into a new home and still trying to settle in. No home Internet right now and I am writing this entry at a library in Manhattan. I just realized how much I miss blogging and I hope to get back to it soon. In so many ways, Manga Therapy is “therapy” for me. I don’t want to take that for granted.

A Look Back At 2010 (Part IV: October to December)

Alright, the final stretch. Good god, this December was one month that really had some crazy moments. Here’s the final part of the 2010 year-in-review: October to December 2010!
October 2010
New York Comic-Con/New York Anime Festival takes place. Anime fans become pissed that their portion becomes relegated to the basement of the Jacob Javits Convention Center. There were some great screenings & panels, but it was more NYCC than anything else. Thinking about the retrospective piece I wrote on NYAF, I’m giving Reed a chance to fix things.
Kodansha USA takes over the manga titles they previously licensed to Del Rey Manga. Much speculation occurs when they were listed as having a panel at NYAF, but the listing disappeared. Turns out Kodansha never even submitted a panel to them. Weird.
The Comics & Digital Conference at NYCC took place. A report stated that the North American manga market dropped 9% in the first half of 2010. If the trend continued, the market would have dropped 20% for the whole year. A positive sign is that the digital comic market is growing. Publishers finally getting with the times, aren’t they?
X Japan, VAMPS, Puffy AmiYumi, & Boom Boom Satellites rocked the U.S. with various performances across the country (though Puffy only did the Far East to East Showcase at NYC). I can tell you that out of those bands so far, Boom Boom Satellites is planning another American tour next year. So look for them & the American release of “TO THE LOVELESS” in 2011. X Japan as well.
Ore No Imouto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai (Oreimo) premieres in Japan (& streamed through Anime News Network) and becomes one of the most-talked-about anime series of the year. From incestous themes to otaku commentary to bitchy tsundere girls, the show has it all. A funny incident occurs when the 2nd episode of Oreimo was leaked the day before it was suppose to premiere in Japan.
November 2010
VIZ Media announces an app where you can purchase select manga titles onto the Apple iPad. Two questions: how many manga readers have iPads & how many iPad users even read manga? Nice try though.
One Piece Volume 60 sells 2 million in 4 days. Everyone loves Sanji’s cooking, EVERYONE.
Summer Wars begins its run for an Oscar nomination. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, please do so starting at the end of this month. It’s an amazing movie.
November 15 will be known as “Overdeveloped Teen Warrior Day” happens when VIZ announced it would publish Tenjho Tenge the way it was meant to be published. Crunchyroll also picks up Ikki Tousen for its anime catalog. Let the boobies hit the floor.
K-ON! sells over 424,000 Blu-Ray discs and 81,000 DVD volumes of the 2nd TV anime series. They have also taken over the Oricon music charts with hit singles from the Hokago Tea Time Band over the course of the year as well. Now with Yen Press publishing the manga and Bandai licensing the anime, will we see K-ON! Mania in North America?
December 2010
This month marked the beginning of what could be the end of anime & manga. Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara pushes “Bill 156”, a bill that would ban any form of anime & manga that portrays sexually-related content in order to protect minors. It was originally an “anti-cartoon child porn” law which got rejected earlier this year. The bill got revised to target everything and it was officially passed by the Tokyo government a week ago. My thoughts on this whole ordeal will be coming pretty soon.
Square Enix opens up a digital manga store in North America. You can purchase a few of their hit titles for only $5.99. Will fans bite? We shall see.
Kodansha USA finally announces its lineup for Summer 2011 at Kinokuniya Bookstore NYC in front of an audience of anxious fans. Good to see them address certain issues & bring back fan-favorite titles from Del Rey.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter Portable 3rd was released for the Sony PSP. Did it do well? Quite the understatement. The game defied all expectations in terms of sales. 3.3 million copies were sold in 17 days. MonHun Portable 3rd is officially the fastest-selling PSP game of all time in Japan and also Capcom’s fastest-selling title. If the West & mature gamers weren’t so fascinated with shooting things, then maybe the PSP would have done so much better in the West.

I forgot to post this when I got a chance to. This is me, alongside Megumi Sato of Samurai Beat Radio, interviewing one of my favorite rock bands ever during New York Anime Festival. I like what Michi said about the message behind their album, “TO THE LOVELESS”. Very intelligent guys. I enjoyed talking to them.

Manga Therapy Hosts “Holiday Anime & Manga Day” at Kinokuniya Bookstore, NYC
To everyone living in the Tri-State area, I would like to announce that I will be hosting Holiday Anime & Manga Day at Kinokuniya Bookstore this Sunday, December 12. Though it’s more like I’m hosting for Samurai Beat Radio than Manga Therapy.
In any case, a lot will be planned for this day-long event. I am extremely looking forward to the One Piece Podcast panel, the Kodansha Comics announcements, and Mari Morimoto’s (who I know personally) panel. I’m planning to check out Osamu Tezuka’s “Ayako” soon. Reading the Wiki synopsis got me interested. Vertical, Inc. already has a sample of the book up on their website, which you can view here.
So, if you’re around the area and a huge anime/manga fan, come on by, say hi, and enjoy what looks to be a day packed with anime/manga fun for everyone! See you guys there!

An interview I conducted with Rika “Angry” Ishikawa, of HANGRY&ANGRY, alongside Megumi Sato of Samurai Beat Radio. This was during New York Anime Festival 2010.
After the interview, I mentioned the song “Iroppoi Onna” to her (she was part of Country Musume) and she sang the line, “~SEXY BABY~”. Funny.
